Great Room

 FINALLY--Phase 1 is complete!!!!  

From 1978 Ranch to 2021 Rustic Ranch. . .

As typically seen in a 1970s ranch, we had separate kitchen, dining, and living rooms.   We had a living room space that hadn't been used since our son moved out and was essentially catching a lot of junk.  The kitchen space was TINY and aggravating.   Everything was dark and depressing and I was just tired of it.  We opened up the wall between the living room and dining room and took out the peninsula cabinet to create one big open concept great room.  

Utilizing reclaimed support beams and floor joists from a house built in 1756 that we purchased from Terry's Reclaimed Lumber in Millen, GA  we were able to create a beautiful open concept space.  We also stained the floors using a product called Concrete Camouflage.  We used Western Brown with Coffee and Mossy Green accents. 

We converted a coat closet that was not needed into a dry bar/liquor cabinet.  It looks Awesome and will be much more useful than a coat closet in a part of the country that you rarely need a coat.  We also changed out the front door for a new Burgundy 3 diamond lite door that mimics one you might see in a 1978 ranch house.  It's Beautiful!!

The kitchen cabinets have 42" uppers and are SW7728 Green Sprout in a Satin Finish with oil rubbed bronze pulls.  The walls are SW6631 Naïve Peach and the ceiling is SW6435 Gratifying Green. 

The splash tiles are hand painted Mexican Talavera Tiles.  These are absolutely gorgeous!   Did I mentioned that Cabinet Masters in Swainsboro, Georgia did a Fantastic job on the cabinets and they #NailedIt with my potato and onion drawers that I asked for!

 

The open shelving is made from sunken cypress pulled from Savannah River and the Countertops are epoxy coated Acacia Wood butcher block.    Adding the sliding glass door will allow us to open up the space for outdoor living/entertaining.  We made the island by repurposing an old dresser, adding casters and an oiled butcher block top.

The living room area has a Stressless Reclining Sofa and a COOL starburst clock along with a new ceiling fan, can lights, and rug.   We also had a drop from the Sunken Cypress that we made into a coffee table. 

Glad this phase is done!  We still have the den and exterior to do, but that has to wait about a year.

Saxon Homestead Remodel--Master Suite

 The Master bedroom was dark and depressing with the 70s paneling and the all wood on wood on wood look wasn't creating a soothing retreat. 

Also light sea mist medium pile 1990s carpeting and dogs don't really work out well. 

We decided to just paint the paneling.  I painted the accent wall and doors SW 6207 Retreat, the other 3 walls are painted SW 6435 Gratifying Green, and the trim is SW6434 Spinach White.  

 Next order of business was to get rid of the NASTY carpet.  I found an awesome product called Concrete Camouflage.  I settled on Western Brown with Coffee and Mossy Green Accents.  Preparation is Key and this is a multistep process, but the finished product turned out MUCH better than I anticipated.  

New bedroom furniture, new wall sconces, new bifold doors that are NOT louvered, new door hardware and we have a much more calming, relaxing space.  OH--and we FINALLY upgraded to a KING after 33 years.  I CANNOT believe we didn't do this sooner!

Notice the sheets.  These sheets are wonderful!  They are exactly what I look for in a sheet.  They don't pill, aren't slick, and just feel like home.  These are the ticking stripe sheets from Red Land Cotton.

Next we tackled the master bathroom.  We have essentially been showing in a camper shower for 25 years and using a tiny 20" vanity.  You will notice that the original green linoleum and the original green Formica vanity top from 1978 are still in place.  The only change we've made in this room since moving in was to finish peeling the wallpaper off, painting the walls, and putting in one of those cheap over the toilet shelves.  

We had this odd off-set in the dining room that worked ok to put a China Cabinet in, however we thought it would work much better to bump our shower out into that space and make the dining room wall flush from the hallway to the exterior wall.  This slight change gave us 30" more depth in our bathroom.  We were able to install a LARGE walk in shower with a rain shower head, bench, and his & hers shampoo cubbies.

This rain shower is AMAZING!

We used the same SW 6435 Gratifying Green paint from the bedroom for the walls and the SW6434 Spinach White for the trim, installed a new 30" vanity painted in SW6207 Retreat, all new Aged Bronze fixtures and new vanity light.  With the larger vanity, we were able to do away with the over the toilet shelf unit.   

I found some reproduction vintage travel postcards showing cruise line photos from the 1920s to add some visual charm.

No onto the great room--If I can get the cabinet man in gear. 

Saxon Homestead Remodel--Guest Bath

 Formerly known has the teenage boy/dog bath.  I was embarrassed for guests to use this room.  It was obviously re-decorated for a young boy without major changes to the 1978 Fiberglass tub layout. 

It included a mix-match of blue, black and white but NOT in a good way!  Plus the switches and outlets had paint on them, the "Plastic" tile was beginning to deteriorate. and the pretty blue grout was bleached in spots. AND you can tell I had major issues trying to keep the towel bar on the wall.

I did like the color combination, but had to figure out to make it work for a grown up guest bath. 

Going with Sherwin Williams Tidewater Blue wall paint, white subway wall tile with Pearl Gray grout and a patterned Delatorre floor tile with Charcoal Grout,  we have something absolutely B-U-tiful!  We re-used the toilet and sink but changed out all the faucets to a brushed nickel instead of the gold brass/chrome/nickel combination we had going on as well as a new vanity light.  We painted and recessed the medicine cabinet, and adapted the storage cabinet to hang on the wall. 

LOVE! and it's so adult looking!

Add a few Monet prints to the walls and new switches/plate covers and I now have a beautiful guest bath that I'm not worried about people using.
